2016 BMW X1 spied inside and out; M35i version to pack 350 HP?

Plug-in hybrid version planned

The second generation BMW X1 has returned in a new set of up-close spy images ahead of an official reveal likely planned for the second half of the year.
Still heavily camouflaged, the new X1 will adopt an evolutionary design but underneath the skin it will be an entirely different car as it's bound to ride on the UKL1 platform. As a consequence, front-wheel drive will be standard but select versions will be optionally available with an xDrive all-wheel drive system. It might not be that noticeable in the attached photos but the new X1 will be substantially bigger and it will even be offered as a seven-seater (5+2).
The engine lineup will be pretty much borrowed from the MINI and the 2-Active Tourer MPV while a plug-in hybrid version will also be offered likely with the hardware found in the upcoming facelifted 3-Series plug-in hybrid which was spotted yesterday.
According to German media, there's also going to be a range-topping X1 M35i variant which despite its designation will get a four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine developing an estimated 350 HP (257 kW). Set to arrive next year, the hotter crossover will be offered with a standard xDrive system and should carry a rather steep starting price of €55,000.
The regular second-gen BMW X1 will likely premiere in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. PHOTOS
