BMW X6 is the dirty fun, no?

This never would have occurred to me if I hadn't wound up idling next to one in traffic over the weekend: The X6 is BMW's replacement for the late Pontiac Aztek! Same humpbacked silhouette, same tiptoes stance, same identity crisis what is it? Only, guess what, BMW got it right. Or at least BMW made a vehicle that, whatever its mission may be, offers up terrific entertainment en route to defining that mission. [Read more...]

BMW announces super-efficient 316d

BMW says that the greenest and most efficient 3-Series ever, the 316d, will go on sale later this year across Europe. Slotting below the 318d as the automaker’s entry-level model, the 316d will average 62.8 mpg in the European combined cycle (or about 52 mpg using United States customary measurement). Its 1,995cc (2.0-liter) four-cylinder diesel engine puts out 116 horsepower and 192 lb-ft. of torque but only emits 118 g/km of CO2. BMW says it will run to 62 mph in 10.9 seconds and tops out at 125 mph. It will come standard with a six-speed manual transmission. The BMW 316d will cost just £35 annually in taxes in the United Kingdom thanks to its C Vehicle Excise Duty rating. In the U.K., the 316d sedan will go on sale for £23,330 in September. It includes air conditioning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls and fog lamps as standard.

BMW Z4 by G-Power

The tuning house G-Power starts off by adding a set of their signature Silverstone wheels and height-adjustable G-POWER coil-overs in order to achieve the perfect stance. The GZ4-RS, 9 way adjustable shock absorbers also help to tune the dampening characteristics of the Z4 to work best with the sticky 295 series rubber incase there is a challenge regarding the vehicle’s handling abilities.

The German mechanics have managed to keep the grease out from under their fingernails. Thanks to factory plug and play connectors, they have been able to extract an additional 45 HP from the car’s twin turbo straight six 100% electronically, increasing the output of G-Power’s Z4 sDrive 35i to 345 HP, good enough to get the new BMW to sprint from 0 to 60 PH in just 4.7 seconds down from the standard version’s 5.1 second 0 to 60 MPH time. BMW Set to Pump Up Energy Plan

More than 60 percent of the plant's total energy requirements are met by burning methane gas, and Bobby Hitt, department manager of media and public affairs for BMW Manufacturing Co., said the expansion will help the company more efficiently use the gas siphoned from the landfill. [Read more...]

BMW Tops Lexus for Third Month

June 2 (Bloomberg) -- Bayerische Motoren Werke AG’s BMW brand outsold Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus division for a third straight month in May, challenging the Japanese maker’s nine- year reign as the top seller of luxury vehicles in the U.S.

Sales totaled 18,383 for the BMW brand, a 28 percent drop from a year earlier, the Munich-based company said in an e- mailed statement. Lexus reported 16,922 vehicles sold, a decline of 36 percent.

A Lexus loss of the lead in full-year U.S. luxury sales would be another blow for Toyota City, Japan-based Toyota, which posted its first annual loss in 59 years for the period that ended in March. The BMW brand is ahead of Lexus 76,819 to 73,186 after this year’s first five months. [Read more...]

2009 BMW 335d vs 2009 Audi A4 3.2 Quattro

We've given high praise to the modern diesels we've tested (usually in Europe) over the last several years, as these engines are a world away from the diesels you might unfondly remember. Advancements in turbochargers, fuel injection and urea systems, along with the advent of ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel, mean today's turbodiesels are far cleaner and quieter than previous oil burners. Yet they still deliver the technology's promise of low fuel consumption and generous torque. [Read more...]

Seduction, BMW tells us, is the name of the game in the modern roadster market. Demographic evidence and customer confessions suggest that hardly anyone actually needs a wind-in-the-hair car with a small trunk and just two seats, so people have a lot of time to stroke their chins, consult the position of the planets and think about the purchase. We aren't talking corn harvesters or fire trucks here. Buyers have to fall in love. [Read more...]
