BMW announces super-efficient 316d

BMW says that the greenest and most efficient 3-Series ever, the 316d, will go on sale later this year across Europe. Slotting below the 318d as the automaker’s entry-level model, the 316d will average 62.8 mpg in the European combined cycle (or about 52 mpg using United States customary measurement). Its 1,995cc (2.0-liter) four-cylinder diesel engine puts out 116 horsepower and 192 lb-ft. of torque but only emits 118 g/km of CO2. BMW says it will run to 62 mph in 10.9 seconds and tops out at 125 mph. It will come standard with a six-speed manual transmission. The BMW 316d will cost just £35 annually in taxes in the United Kingdom thanks to its C Vehicle Excise Duty rating. In the U.K., the 316d sedan will go on sale for £23,330 in September. It includes air conditioning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls and fog lamps as standard.
