M550dX will get some M tweaks but won't be a diesel M5 or even an M division vehicle
BMW has confirmed it is planning an M550dX performance edition but the latter won't be an M5 or even an official M division model.
According to a report by Autocar, the M550dX will benefit from some M chassis and styling tweaks but it won't become the M5 diesel because its all-wheel drive system makes the car ride too high.
"There are specific reasons why we didn't go with four-wheel drive, one of them being the four-wheel drive system that requires the car to ride higher than existing M models," a BMW insider told Autocar.
The M550dX will feature a tri-turbo 3.0 liter diesel unit that produces 381 PS (375 bhp / 280 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft). It will have a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time of around 5.0 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).
The engine will also be featured in the future X5xDrive550d and X6xDrive550d models.
