BMW has announced plans to offer several new engines on the 2012 3-Series.
First up, there's a new 320i with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 184 PS (135 kW / 181 hp) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque. When connected to a six-speed manual transmission, the engine enables the sedan to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds and average 5.9 L/100km.
The two new diesel variants also have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. In the 318d, the mill produces 143 PS (105 kW / 141 hp) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque. It allows the car to run from 0-100 km/h in 9.1 seconds and hit a top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph). In terms of efficiency, the model returns 4.5 L/100km with CO2 emissions of 117 g/km.
The 316d, on the other hand, has 116 PS (85 kW / 114 hp) and 260 Nm (192 lb-ft) of torque. This enables the sedan to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 10.9 seconds, before topping out at 202 km/h (126 mph). While it won't win any races, owners can expect to average 4.4 L/100km with CO2 emissions as low as 115 g/km.
In related news, BMW will offer an all-wheel drive system - called xDrive - on the 320d, 320i, 328i and 335i. The 320d xDrive will be launched in July and the other models will follow shortly thereafter.
