BMW AG issued a recall yesterday for 1.3 million cars to repair a battery cable cover located in the trunk. The defect affects 5- and 6-Series models built between 2003 and 2010.
"In some remote cases, the battery cable cover inside the boot of these vehicles may be incorrectly mounted," BMW said in a statement.
"This can result in the electrical system malfunctioning, the vehicle failing to start and, in some cases, to charring or fire." BMW added they are not aware of any incidents resulting from this defect.
Less than 1 percent of the vehicles inspected so far were found to have the faulty battery cable cover.
Of the 1.3 million vehicles affected, approximately 368,000 cars are located in the United States, 293,000 in Germany, 109,000 in Britain and about 102,000 in China, according to a BMW spokesperson.
The time needed to complete the repair takes about 30 minutes to an hour.
