BMW i8 Concept Spyder en route to LA Auto Show - report
According to BMWblog, the BMW i8 Concept Spyder will be making an appearance at this year’s L.A. Auto Show which will take place this November. Rumored to reach production phase in 2015, the Concept Spyder is the convertible version of the Coupe and features a shortened wheelbase.
It comes with a rakish windscreen and a semi-transparent hood, while at the back there’s a rear diffuser, U-shaped taillights and “three-dimensional air outlets”.
The BMW i8 Concept Spyder is motivated by a plug-in hybrid powertrain that has a 129 hp (96 kW / 131 PS) electric motor and a 220 hp (164 kW / 223 PS) 3-cylinder gasoline engine. Powering the front wheels is the electric motor, while the rear wheels are powered by the conventional engine. This means that the car is all-wheel drive and has a combined output of 349 hp (260 kW / 354 PS), enough for a 0-62 mph sprint in just 5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).
With its lithium-ion batteries, the i8 Concept Spyder can travel in electric mode for 19 miles (30 km), while the combined fuel consumption rating stands at just 3 liters / 100 km (78.4 mpg US or 94.1 mpg UK).
