BMW i3 spied with new range-extending engine

BMW i3 prototype with range-extended engine 19.12.2012

Our spies have already caught the BMW i3on numerous occasions, but now they have managed to snap the first photos of the range-extended REx variant.

Caught filling up at petrol station, the prototype looks virtually production ready as it is equipped with a completed body that includes 'real' head and taillights.
There's no word on specifications, but BMW has previously said the REx will have a "small, very smooth-running and quiet petrol engine" that will act as a generator to recharge the batteries when they become low.
On the other hand, the electric version is expected to have an electric motor that develops 170 HP (125 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. It will enable model to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than eight seconds and travel approximately 130-160 km (80-100 miles) on a single charge.
