This is the first time the xDrive system is used on a FWD vehicle of BMW with transversally installed engine. Both vehicles will be offered as standard with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
BMW says “the Active Tourer has already proven that front-wheel drive technology fully meets the brand’s demands in terms of driving dynamics”, but the four-wheel drive system will “further improve traction, vehicle stability and cornering dynamics, with the aim of enhancing safety and driving pleasure”. The producer also explains the additional weight of the entire four-wheel drive technology is around 61 kg.
The 225i xDrive variant has an average fuel consumption of 6,5–6,4 l/100 km with CO2 emissions of 152-148 g/km. The diesel 220d xDrive model averages at 4,8-4,6 l/100km with combined emissions of CO2 of 127-122 g/km. LINK
