BMW has revealed the 328 Hommage concept just before its show debut at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este near Lake Como, Italy this weekend.
Based on the Vision Connected Drive Concept revealed in Geneva, the 328 Hommage is a modern interpretation of the classic sports car from the 1930s. Bathed in that distinctive diagonal carbon fiber weave, the 328 Hommage focuses on lightweight construction through carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The result is a gross vehicle weight of only 780 kilograms (1720 lbs).
The 328 Hommage follows in the footsteps of the M1 Hommage concept from 2008. Unfortunately, unlike the M1, the 328 Hommage is a hand-me-down concept that fails to impress with its 3D kidney grille and faux leather straps on the fenders and hood. These elements seem like forced attempts to make a stylistic connection with the original 328.
Yes, of course it's a retro concept that's honoring a classic, but something a bit more bespoke like the Mille Miglia concept would be have been more appropriate, especially for such an iconic vehicle that represents so much of what BMW stands for today: "dynamics, aesthetics and a high level of innovation."
