During BMW's annual press conference, company chairman Dr. Norbert Reithofer revealed plans to introduce the "New Energy Vehicle" (NEV) at the Shanghai Motor Show.
Details are limited, but Reithofer stated the NEV will be based on the 5-Series Long Wheelbase and feature plug-in hybrid technology. He added that the car would be built in China and "benefit from the strength and the excellent reputation of the BMW brand."
No word on what powers the NEV, but the 5-Series ActiveHybrid concept used a 306 PS (225 kW / 302 hp) 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-six petrol engine and a 54 PS (40 kW / 54 hp) electric motor. It didn't have a plug-in hybrid system, so the electric-only range is a mystery.
Besides talking about the New Energy Vehicle, Reithofer also confirmed the MINI Coupe and next-generation 1-Series will be launched later this year. Furthermore, he stated the company is developing a new three-cylinder engine with TwinPower Turbo technology.
