Could be a sedan or a crossover
A senior source within BMW has told What Car? the Bavarian marque is already analyzing the prospects of launching an i5 model.
The third member in the recently introduced "i" family after the i3 and i8 could be an i5 model which will either be a sedan or a crossover. The car hasn't been green-lighted for production yet and its body style hasn't been decided but we assume it will remain true to the BMW "i" principles such as a rear-wheel drive layout and the use of CFRP and carbon fiber in its construction.
Once a decision will be taken regarding this possible i5, BMW will need to think about whether it will be a fully electric car, a range-extending model or a plug-in hybrid. The same source mentions the best solution for this model could be the plug-in hybrid version which although would provide a longer range than the i3, the car would still be aimed at those doing mostly city driving.
