Competitors such as Mercedes' AMG and Audi's RS models already boast AWD in their line-up which has left the Bavarian automaker playing catchup. However, it is still going to be many years until we see the M5 AWD and M6 AWD. The M5 is first in-line to receive the technology, following a year on from the next generation 5-series that is expected in 2016 or 2017.
The M division already has the X5 M and the X6 M, but both are based on an all-wheel-drive architecture while the M5 and M6 are based on a rear-wheel-drive system. Nitschke also confirmed that the M3 and M4 will never stray from their rear-wheel-drive architecture that he describes as fantastic.
