BMW 2-Series Convertible

BMW has announced it will travel to next month's Paris Motor Show to introduce the topless version of the 2-Series.
The 2-Series Convertible is almost identical to the 2-Series coupe from the rocker panels up to the belt line. Above that, the 2 gains a multi-layer cloth soft top that can open or close at the push of a button in just 20 seconds, even while driving at speeds of up to 30 mph. The top comes standard in black, but buyers can order it in gray or in brown at an extra cost.

Cargo capacity figures are not available yet but BMW promises it has gone to great lengths to maximize trunk space even when the top is down. The rear seatbacks can fold down when extra space is needed, letting owners carry bulky items such as two 46-inch golf bags or a pair of snowboards.

The 2-Series convertible lineup mirrors the coupe and consists of the 228i and the M235i. The 228i is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 240 horsepower and 255 lb-ft. of torque, enough grunt to send the ragtop from zero to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, though buyers looking to tackle adverse weather conditions can order BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system at an extra cost.

The M235i is equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six engine that sends 320 horsepower and 330 lb-ft. of torque to the rear wheels via either an eight-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual unit. The M235i takes 4.8 seconds to hit 60 mph from a stop when fitted with the automatic.

The BMW 2-Series Convertible will go on sale next spring. The 228i will cost $38,850, the 228i xDrive will retail for $40,650 and the M235i will start at $48,650. All prices include a mandatory $950 destination charge.
